expecting twins, new car recommendations
We are expecting twins and need to get a new car that has better safety and room for the four of us. I was looking at some SUV's such as the Lincoln Navigator with bucket seats in the scond row and a 3rd row of seats for any extra passengers, however the gas mileage is horrible. Please advice what you think is best bucket seats? vs. bench seat? is a 3rd row of seats necessary? should we be looking at minivans? This is our first go around please help! What type of car, SUV, minivan did or do you have when your twins were born?

Welcome to the site! I replied to your blog post with the same question.
"After having twin daughters I realized that I would always and forever be on the losing end of any family votes."
Congratulations on the twins! We have a Chevy Suburban (hubby's) with bucket seats 2nd row- where the boys sit- and 3rd row bench for big sis and her friends. It is nice to have room between the boys- but difficult if they are strapped into their seats to get anyone in and out of the 3rd row without putting the front seat all the way forward. Otherwise there is plenty of room when everyone is situated- but takes gas big time!
My car is a Toyota Highlander, I love it. It has a 3rd row - but can only use it when we don't bring the stroller or get groceries or anything as this is the storage space. It works wonderfully for the boys and getting big sis to school, etc. better gas mileage- but now they have hybrid ones as well. My car is best for all the local stuff- and for 4 it would be a great choice- I think.
best of luck,
Lanie
congratulations on your twins!!
but we dont get upset about what we really did not have a choice over...its a beautiful suv...i hated the idea of buying something like this but i found one i personally like(color/new model etc...)
we too had to buy a new automobile when we found out about the boys coming....it was our first purchase for our new very full life...we have a 28 month old son and a 14 1/2 year old daughter,,, we had no choice but to buy the new chevy suburban a minivan was not going to be big enough...we also opted for the second row captain seats..our two older kids sit in the second row now but not sure who will sit where when the boys come??? GAS is alot ,, it cost 90.00 to fill it up last week
btw:my girlfriend tells me the really nice minivan you can get is the odyssey...
We had two existing children when we found out that we were having twins in November and so the five passenger SUV that we had at the time was not going to cut it. What we had was a Chevrolet Trailbazer, which my wife LOVED, but as I said it was only a five passenger vehicle. With the idea of a minivan not being appealing to either of us (looks, lack of 4X4) we decided to stay in the SUV style. Suburbans and Tahoes were very large vehicles and are VERY pricey, even on the used market. We decided to stay in the same vehicle class that we were in and get the EXT (exteneded) version of the Trailblazer and we LOVE it. Having the third row is wonderful even now before the twins arrive. The second row is a bench seat with a 65/35 split - both sections flip out of the way to gain access to the third row. You can also lay the third row flat for an immense amount of cargo space. This got us the third row we needed and kept us in roughly the same size vehicle. Got a great deal on a low miles used model too. Unlike a minivan - this vehicle can TOW - easily pulling a camper, boat or other large items with a 290 HP six cylinder engine. It's really the perfect truck for our 'extended family' needs.
Congratulations! We had two cars before our twins came, and had figured on trading for an SUV for one of them. But we already have an existing son, so when we found out it was twins, we went the minivan route. We bought a Honda Odessey, and it is really great. We drive seven hours several times a year to where our family lives, so comfort was a must! Some perks:
VERY easy to fold down the third row (folds flat into the floor, either all of it, or a 35/60 split),
lots of cargo space even with the seat up (at St. Patrick's day, we fit our HUGE suitcase, Two pack'n'plays, and the double stroller!!)
Middle row is three seats, but the middle one is a jump seat that you can remove and store in the floor, so that you can access the third seat without needing to fold down a seat. If you have the jump seat stored, you can also either leave the middle seats split, or slide the seat behind the passengare seat over so the "walkway" is next to the door on that side. That is how ours is arranged currently, so my son can walk back to the rear seat for his booster, and the twins are in the middle section, side by side in their infant seats.
Another big one is it had the Economy thingy that shifts it down from all cylinders to just four to save on the gas milage. Very nice...I got 435 miles on the highway last weekend, not too bad for a minivan!
(off topic, but I also enjoyed the heated seats this winter, and it is nice that the air in the back is separate from the front, so we can have more blowing on us than the kids, for example!
many thanks for all that cool stuff about the odessey...im going to buy a new vehicle next october,,,my daughter turns 16 and is getting our camry...the dh bought a 2007 suburban and im supposed to be driving it but its huge and intimidating....im really considering the odessey next year ...
I know this is a little late and you probably already found a vehicle...but I have 4 kids and I drive a Kia Rondo and I love it! It fits 7 people and it's great on gas. Plus, Kias now have the 10 year/100k mile warranty. Good luck to you!
Congrats on your twins!! You probably already got your new SUV but we also had to buy new cars when we found out about the twins. We already had 1 daughter and about a month after we found out about the twins hubby bought a 2008 Durango and I just bought a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country. I love it!! In both of the cars the second row is for the twins and the third row is for my 2 1/2 year old. The second row swivels around there is a foldable table and dual DVD players. The second row has bucket seats and the third row has a bench seat. We have alot of room and the bench seat folds down in 2 places so the smaller part folds down and we put the stroller there and the bigger part stays up for my dd to sit there. This is the car we are planning on using when we go on vacation. The van was a little hard to drive at first because I wasn't used to driving something that big around but it gets easier.
