How far along were you when you found out you were going to be having twins? Was it the biggest shock of your life? Did you find out at an ultrasound or by some other means?
We were 8 weeks along, started spotting and thought oh great miscarrige and went for u/s and they called the next day and said bed rest for 2-3 days till spotting stops there are 2 sacs I thought holy cow Im 36 and having twins. My hubby sold his sole to the devil because he wanted 2 more hehehe.
I was 7 weeks when I found out via my first u/s. When I saw the (first) baby and heard the heartbeat I jokingly mentioned I was glad there was just one. The tech and I bantered about this for a moment until she said "I think I spoke too soon." I think I said "that's not funny...you're kidding right?". Almost what my husband said when I told him. Mercy. Never in a million years did I dream of twins. I have a two year old daughter and still don't know how I'll manage with three kids and two arms. Big shock? To say the least!!!
With the first set we found out at 20 wks. The u/s tech took a quick look, and then said that she forgot something in her office. What she was actually doing was calling my dr to see if we knew we were having twins. While she was gone, my hubby jokingly said "It's probably twins." When she came back in the room, she looked again, and then pointed out our two babies. I started both laughing and crying, we just couldn't believe it. We were in such shock, we forgot to ask if she could tell if they were boys or girls.
With the second set we found out at 13 wks, I told my dr I didn't want to wait to find out if there was more than one this time. I don't think he really thought there was a chance that I actually was having another set of twins (I was his first mom that spontaneously had 2 sets). When we went in for the u/s we were still in shock when she actually told us that we were having twins again. We found out on Dec 23.
I know exactly how you feel. Our oldest was 23 mo when our first set of twins were born. Needless to say, you find a way to do it. Don't be afraid to ask for help - moms, sisters, friends anybody who offers.
And here I am whining about having three! I'm a military wife (my DH will be in Iraq until the end of the year) and am familiar with 'just doing it'. It's the logistics of a toddler and two babies by myself that has me anxious. We don't have family around and I'm worried about going on bedrest (my mother-in-law can come for awhile when this happens.) And it will happen. I've got the high risk tri-fecta...35, prior preterm labor and twins. Mercy. I'm also concerned about being able to give my daughter the energy (and patience) she deserves after the babies come. I'm sure I can do it, I just don't yet know how! Thanks for the kind words...
We found out at 14-15 weeks. My OB said I was measuring about 4 weeks too big and accused me of getting my dates wrong. I had a weird feeling it was twins, but everyone said that it was just the way it was with the second child (getting sick earlier and worse, feeling a lot of movement early and in more places, and of course getting bigger faster). I even asked the Dr at 10 weeks if she could hear more than one heartbeat, because I felt like it might be twins. She kind of laughed at me and assured me there was only one.
After I measured large at 14 weeks I had to wait a week for the US, so went to my prof (a Genetics OB) to find out possible causes. Of course twins and multiples and wrong due date were on the list, but so was a lot of bad things. Don't get me wrong, it was still a huge shock when we saw Baby A and Baby B on the screen, but there was a moment of relief before the shock hit. My husband who thought he only wanted 2 children total, couldn't stop grinning ear to ear.
Did anyone else have any feeling they were having twins before US confirmation?
With our second set I had a feeling that we were having twins again. My dr thought he was just hummering me when he scheduled an u/s at 13 wks. We found out on Dec 23, and my dr called me on x-mas eve and said that he thought it was so funny that we were having another set - I thought it was pretty cool of him to actually call me on x-mas eve to see how we were taking the news.
I thought I was having boy/girl twins - just another feeling I had, and maybe because we were trying for a boy - and then found out at 20 wks that it was 2 girls again.
Hey All!
I found out we were having twins when I was 7 days, 4wks. I am 23, not done with my degree yet (I'm super close though!), and our financial situation is definitely less than par than I had hoped when I had children. This is my first pregnancy so, the idea of being a new mom was shocking enough for me. My husband and I went to a pregnancy center for a free ultrasound because I was getting ansy waiting for my appointment to come at the dr's office. It definitely was the "shock of my life" feeling. I laughed really hard. Cried tears of amazement when I saw the heart beats. Never would I have expected twins, I was not on fertility treatments of any kind and the last person in our family to have twins was my mom's cousin. However, my husband's father was an indentical twin so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Finding out was the most surreal and amazing experience. We laughed all the way home, the rest of the evening/night and through the next day....just laughing! :) Now we just couldn't see it any other way except to have twins and it's awesome how excited everyone is.
Mindy...
I am so scared of having twins again that I don't think I will have anymore kids. It is so amazing that you have two sets! You are truly a super mom!

I always had this feeling that I would have twins, even before I got pregnant. My grandma had fraternal twins and I was the last granddaughter to have a baby so I kind of thought there was a possiblity. When I was really really sick and getting big so fast, I really started to wonder but my doctor assured me we were only having one. When we went to our only u/s at 20 weeks we found out it was twins. Twinsdad was super happy, I cried, could not stop crying. I did not sleep for several nights and cried a lot, I was excited but really really scared. Everything turned out great in the end. I have two beautiful daughters, but I could NEVER handle another twin pregnancy.
I had switched OB/GYN's because my first was less than sensitive to my first time pregnancy concerns. On my first visit with my new dr. He must have asked me at least 5 times "are you absolutely sure of the day of your last cycle" and I told him over and over again how sure I was. When it came time to do the ultrasound. He said "uh oh" and got a smirk on his face and turned the screen towards me. "Do you see what I see?" he asked. And there they were clear is day moving their little hands and feet and all. I was amazed and shocked and kind of in disbelief and think that is where I still stand today. 11 weeks and 1 day with the two most precious gifts of my life.
My poor husband was away on field exercise when I found out and had to tell him over the phone. : ( I don't think he will really believe it until he sees the ultrasound pictures for himself.
I found out when I was 6 weeks with my first u/s. I was shocked. I had no idea I was having twins and I called my husband @ work and he was like are you kidding with me?? And I said no and he was so shocked to.
Hi my name is Crystal and we are expecting twins on November 20th 2008, we are 12 weeks. The Dr. called and said yes you are prego and hey by the way your hormone levels are alittle high i have you scheduled for an u/s next week i really didn't think any thing of it because they had said the same thing about my prego's with my first boy so i took my oldest with me (she is 12) but any way I am laying there and the u/s tech ask if twins ran in family? was i hopin to have twins? I asked why and then she turn the screen to me and i saw them two i asked my daughter if she was seeing what i was seeing and she said there are two, i hope they are girls mom i really don't want any more bothers.(lol). We found out at 5 weeks and 5 days. My husband knew that i was going in for an u/s but he wasn't able to make it so we called him and told him he dropped the phone and his co-worker picked it up and asked me what in the world i had told him so i told him that we are having twins ok that explains the irish jig that his is doing on top the rig. he flew in that night just to be able to see the ultrasound pictures. lol thats how we found out.
