Many times as parents of twins or multiples we may find ourselves lacking the support we really need from our friends and family. Not because they don’t want to support us, but because they just can't identify with what parenting multiples is like on a daily basis. Any member of a local twin parenting club will tell you that even just an hour spent with other parents of multiples can do wonders for your outlook on parenting, your kids and life in general.
Of course a local mothers of multiples or twin parenting group is the ideal choice, but not all of us have that option. When face to face interaction isn't possible, an online twin parenting support group is the next best thing.
When my wife was pregnant with our twin girls, she started an email list with some other ladies who were also pregnant with twins. They met on some parenting forums just like the ones here at TwinParents.com. Today our girls are two years old and my wife still keeps in contact with many of those moms. Now days, social networking sites are so popular, that finding other parents of multiples or expecting parents of multiples is unbelievably easy.
Create your twin parenting profile
The first step in creating your online mom of twins (or dad of twins) support group is to sign up at one or more of the popular social networking websites. My personal favorite is http://www.twitter.com, but you may find that you prefer one of the others. The important thing is that you choose one of the popular ones. The more people there are, the more parents of twins there will be!
When creating your profile or editing your existing profile, be sure to mention that you have twins. This will help other parents of multiples find you in the future. All of these sites have a "bio" area which is perfect for mentioning that you have twins or triplets. You may even want to choose a screen name that mentions you are a twin parent (i.e. "mom2twins") as it will also help people find you. Don’t be surprised if the first name you try is already taken, there are a lot of twin parents out there.
Find other parents of twins
Once you have created your profile it is time to find other parents of twins and multiples on the site. To do this, we will use the site's (in our case Twitter) search feature to help us find and add other twin parents. To search Twitter go to http://search.twitter.com (other social networking sites have similar features, just look for "search" or "find friends"). Search for phrases like "my twins", "our twins" and "our triplets" as that will bring up results created by parents of twins and multiples. Then start adding friends! You will find that when people see a fellow twin parent has added them, they are very likely to reciprocate.
So you have connected with other twin parents, now what?
At this point it is very likely that you have created your own personal "parents of multiples support group" consisting of many people. All of those people know what its like to be pregnant with twins, to have newborn twins, to raise twin toddlers and they all know what its like to feel that no one else really understands.
Where you take it from this point is entirely up to you. When I first tried this on Twitter I didn't even talk to anyone for weeks. Just reading what other parents of twins were writing was very comforting not to mention amusing. Gradually I began to make my own posts which lead to meeting even more parents of multiples.
Do your thing girl (or guy - for you twin dads)
Now you know how to find other twin parents, so get out there and get your social networking on! While you are at it, tell all your new friends about TwinParents.com.
